Oklahoma City, Oklahoma –
Taylor Houston scored 12 points,
Megan Nestor scores 12 providing a spark off the bench, and freshman
Bobbie Fouquet scores 9 as the Flying Queens remain unbeaten in Sooner Athletic Conference play with a 55-54 win over Oklahoma City University Stars (2-7, 1-3 SAC) at Abe Lemons Arena.
After winning the first two conference games by a combined 3 points, (RV) Wayland Baptist (6-1, 3-0 SAC) found themselves in another close battle. The Stars began the game on a quick 8-0 run that prompted Coach
Jason Cooper to take a quick 30-second timeout. The Flying Queens responded by causing havoc with their defense creating 5 total steals in the quarter by 5 different players. Even though the Queens only shot 15.4% from the field in the first, they only trailed 13-17 at the end of the opening quarter.
The Queens began the 2
nd quarter on an 11-2 giving them a 24-19 lead and maintained a 31-29 lead at the half. After the break, the Queens led for the entirety of the 3
rd quarter and even took a 13-point lead, their largest of the game. The Stars were able to claw their way back into the game during the 4
th quarter due to an off-shooting night for the Queens. The Queens were able to hold off the comeback from the Stars by getting some much needed stops down the stretch. An
Emily Sigala lay-up put the Queens up 55-52 with 1:34 remaining in the game. The Stars had an opportunity to take the lead with 12 seconds left, but they were unable to capitalize. The Queens secured a 55-54 victory over the Stars, making them 3-0 by a combined margin of victory of 4 points in an extremely difficult Sooner Athletic Conference.
Coach Cooper was very pleased with the performances from his two sophomore posts. He stated, "
Taylor Houston had a really big game, played really big for us inside. Very excited about what she's doing.
Megan Nestor came off the bench and had some free throws for us again. Between the two players they put in 24 points, and I think 12 rebounds."
When talking about what the Queens can take away from these gritty wins, Coach Cooper said, "One good takeaway is we play really well in really close games. I am proud of our girls fight and they're never give up attitude."
The Queens head to Siloam Springs, Arkansas where they are set to take on John Brown on Saturday, December 9
