ROUND ROCK – Wayland Baptist's cheer team didn't get to compete as expected this weekend at Cheercation: Kalahari The Final Expedition, but the squad still performed well and came home with another national championship title.
"Unfortunately, they dropped the competition because the school we were supposed to compete against (Centenary College of Louisiana) chose not to attend," WBU coach
Kinsley Monroe said. "But we still were able to perform, treating it more like a showcase."
Wayland's 14-member cheer team –

Demmi Payne,
Hope Duran,
Karleigh Licerio,
Racquel Brown,
Samisoni Siaosi,
Miranda Sarinana,
Hannah Gray,
Paulina Yvette-Porras and
Gwen Phillips – performed its routine both Saturday and today.
"We did great (Saturday). There was one little thing that we did (incorrectly) that we fixed and came back stronger today," Monroe said.
WBU earned a score of 91.45 Saturday then was assigned a 93.80 today.
"It was a big improvement," said Monroe, adding that Wayland's final score was 93.03 out of 100, earning the squad the title of Cheer American Collegiate Gameday National Champions.
The results come on the heels of Wayland being awarded a Collegiate Gameday National Championship at the Redline Texas Grand Nationals last weekend in Frisco. That marked the second year in a row Wayland earned that honor.
Cheercation was the final event of the season for Wayland.
"We've had a really, really great season," said Monroe, who credited her graduate assistant, Melissa Lucido for her help. "The team has grown a lot. We set goals at the beginning of the year and were able to meet a lot of them. The girls, and guy, have great attitudes. They're a fun group to be around. They also are very talented. If they set their minds to something, they can do it, and that's what they did this year."
