Wayland Baptist Pioneer legend, Danny Storey, was in shock when he first heard the news of his WBU Athletics Hall of Honor induction, but then set in a feeling of pride and appreciation for Storey as he reflected on his days as a Pioneer.
Â
"I'll do best to try and express what it all means to me. I remember always looking at the names and plaques in the Hall of Honor while I was playing there and thinking to myself there's no way I could do anything deserving of such an honor but that if somehow it happened I would be very proud." said Storey. "Speaking from a basketball standpoint some of the names in the Hall of Honor are coaches and players that are legendary and even better people."
Â
A native of Canyon, Texas and a West Texas star growing up, Danny Storey decided to stay in West Texas and take his talents to Wayland Baptist to join the Pioneers Men's Basketball team. As a member of the program from 2004-2008, the 6'7 Storey proved to be a dominant force on both sides of the court.
Â
After using his redshirt season his first year at Wayland Baptist, Storey proved his outstanding work ethic and determination to make an impact on the Pioneer squad by starting every game during his redshirt freshman season. He averaged 8.8 points per game on 60% shooting from the floor while bringing in 7.3 rebounds per game, helping the Pioneers reach the NAIA National Tournament.
Â
Storey's development continued to improve into the 2006-2007 season when he averaged a double-double for the Pioneers, scoring 16.8 points per game on 67.4% shooting and 10.5 rebounds per game, the fourth best rebounding average in the NAIA. Storey was named All-Sooner Athletic Conference Third Team after leading the nation in defensive rebounds per game.
Â
After his strong junior campaign, the nation finally knew the name Danny Storey. This recognition helped Storey achieve outstanding individual honors during the 2007-2008 season such as 2008 NAIA Second Team All-American, 2008 Sooner Athletic Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year, and All-Sooner Athletic Conference First Team recognition.
Â
Storey earned these honors after another dominant season averaging 14.6 points per game and 10.8 rebounds per game, leading the Sooner Athletic Conference in rebounding and guiding the Pioneers to their second NAIA National Tournament appearance during Storey's tenure.
Â
Storey was well respected among his teammates and coaches, and he was awarded the 2005 Pioneer Coaches award for his hard work on the court and in the classroom, displaying characteristics that embody what being a Pioneer is all about.
Â
"The amount of people who made my experiences as memorable as possible are far too many to name individually and not forget someone. I am still in contact with many people from my days at Wayland and we always reminisce about how great it was and the great times we had! From the road trips to class projects to just sitting in an office and talking about whatever was going on in our lives I had a lot of fun and many, many fond memories!" said Storey. "My coaches, teammates, friends, and university faculty and staff helped to shape me into the man that I am today, and I catch myself trying to pass some of those lessons on to my daughter today."
Â
Storey capped off his magnificent career as a Pioneer with a program record 1,032 career rebounds, 13
th in program history for career points with 1,426 points and secured a professional basketball contract with Alaior Menorcarentals in Spain.
Â
"What made being a Wayland Baptist Pioneer so special is hard to put into words. Playing basketball at Wayland allowed me to experience a lot of things I could only dream of when growing up! I was able to play ball with a lot of amazing teammates and for some great coaches! I was able to meet people from all walks of life and learn about them and from them as well." Story said when referencing what being a Pioneer truly meant to him.
Â
Danny Storey is set to be inducted into the Wayland Baptist University Athletics Hall of Honor at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, September 28
