PLAINVIEW, Texas — In front of the home crowd in Plainview, the Pioneers delivered yet another dramatic finish Saturday afternoon, outlasting Nelson University (TX) 8–7 in an exciting Sooner Athletic Conference matchup. For Wayland Baptist University, it marked their fifth consecutive walk-off victory — an incredible stretch that continues to define this resilient Pioneer squad.
Wayland wasted no time setting the tone, pushing two runs across in the first inning to energize the Pioneer faithful. Nelson answered in the third to even the score, and from there the contest became a back-and-forth battle. The biggest swing of the middle innings came in the fifth when Christian Toledo launched a three-run home run, giving the Pioneers a 5–2 advantage and igniting the dugout. Nelson kept applying pressure and eventually tied the game, setting up another late-inning test for Wayland.
With the game deadlocked late, Sinclair Pimentel delivered one of the biggest moments of the afternoon with a two-run homer in the seventh to put the Pioneers back on top. Nelson responded once again, evening the score at 7–7 in the eighth and forcing yet another tense ninth inning at the ballpark.
But as they've done repeatedly during this remarkable stretch, the Pioneers found a way. In the bottom of the ninth, with the bases loaded and the crowd on its feet, Adrian Lara drew a walk that forced in the winning run, sealing the 8–7 victory and sending Wayland pouring out of the dugout in celebration.
Christian Toledo's three-RBI blast provided crucial momentum, while Pimentel's go-ahead shot shifted the energy late. The bullpen battled through pressure situations to keep the game within reach and give the offense another opportunity to deliver.
The win not only extended Wayland's walk-off streak to five straight games, but it also completed a weekend sweep of Nelson University, further strengthening the Pioneers' position in conference play. With confidence surging and a belief that no game is out of reach, Wayland continues to prove it is built for big moments and late-inning drama.
Your Pioneers next game is Friday, February, 21st, when they take on Oklahoma City University.
