Pioneers Drop First Two at OCU, Look to Bounce Back Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The Wayland Baptist University baseball team battled in a pair of high-scoring contests against Oklahoma City University but came up short in both games as the Stars defended their home field in Sooner Athletic Conference play.

Game One – OCU 6, Wayland 5

In Friday's opener, Wayland jumped out early as Sinclair Pimentel's RBI double scored Christian Toledo in the first inning, giving the Pioneers an early 1-0 edge. But Oklahoma City responded in the bottom of the first with three quick runs as the Stars took control with timely hitting and aggressive base running. After falling behind 3-1, WBU answered in the third with a three-run rally, capped by Adonis Bernal's two-RBI double and an RBI single from Rafaeleduardo Garcia to give Wayland a 4-3 lead.

Both teams traded runs again in the middle innings, with Wayland's offense showing life but struggling to slow down the Stars' bats. Oklahoma City took a 6-5 advantage with a two-run homer in the fifth inning — a lead they held the rest of the way for a 6-5 victory. Defensive miscues and a few timely hits by the Stars proved costly for WBU.

Game Two – OCU 14, Wayland 7

Wayland's bats again came alive in Saturday's rematch, this time putting together some early offense. The Pioneers tallied five runs and eight hits, to put pressure on OCU's pitching. Back-to-back extra-base knocks and consistent contact kept WBU in the game and gave them multiple offensive opportunities.

However, the Stars' lineup surged again with productive at-bats and key extra-base hits, including strong performances from their lead hitters that fueled a 14-7 win in the nightcap. Oklahoma City's offense finished with a dozen hits and steadily pulled away over the middle innings.

Looking Ahead

While the results weren't what the Pioneers hoped for, there were positive signs offensively as Wayland generated consistent scoring opportunities against a strong OCU staff. The focus now shifts to tightening up on the mound and defensively as conference play continues.

Wayland will return to the field tomorrow at noon to face Oklahoma City University in the next matchup of the series, looking to respond and finish the weekend strong.
