Pioneers Return to Winning Ways

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Wayland Baptist baseball team improved to 6-4 on the season Tuesday at Wilder Field with a pair of victories over the Lobos of Sul Ross State University, 5-2 in the opener and 8-5 in the nightcap.

Freshman Paxton Bartley made the most out of his first collegiate start.  The Coronado High School graduate fanned five Lobo hitters in the complete game victory.  He allowed two earned runs on five hits picking up his second win of the season.

Seven Pioneer batters contributed base hits, but a couple were difference makers. Freshman Chris Buitron drove in the game's first run on the first Pioneer triple of the season in the second inning.  Josh Chinni's three-run shot off Sul Ross reliever Ryan Reyes three innings later proved to be the game-winner.

Even though the weather was extremely cold, the bats of the home team were not.  WBU had a combined 16 hits in the two games, seven in the first and nine in the second.

The Pioneers struck for five runs in the first inning of the nightcap, chasing Lobo starter Acy Kimbro.

Another freshman pitcher got the start on the mound for the Pioneers in the final game.  Cooper Reinbold of Amarillo High School pitched five innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs.

Chinni lead the way offensively with another big game, pounding out two doubles in his four at bats and driving in two.  Freshman Dilon Chancellor scored two runs, and sophomore Brian Allen added two base hits of his own.

Senior Kevin Burbank, typically in the Pioneer starting rotation, saw an inning of relief work before handing the ball over to Jace Chancellor, another starter.  A junior, Chancellor struck out all three batters he faced en route to his first save of the season.

Wayland is now 4-0 at home this season and will look to continue that streak on Friday, when they play host to Avila University.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm.
