Box Score 2 OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- The struggles continued for the Wayland baseball team as the Pioneers lost a conference doubleheader to Oklahoma Christian on Friday at Dobson Field on the OC campus.
WBU outhit the Eagles 11-8 in the opener, but came out on the losing end of the scoreboard, 6-2. In the nightcap, the Pioneers scored four runs in the top of the first, but surrendered six in the bottom of the second in a 9-6 defeat.
Sophomore pitcher Ryan Downs took the loss in the first game. The transfer from Central Arizona College allowed four earned runs on eight hits. He struck out five and walked two.
The Pioneers got doubles from Johnny Hendrixson, Josh Chinni and Chris Buitron, but only Buitron's drove in a run. The freshman shortstop's shot to right scored Josh Carroll who led the inning off with a base hit to right. Buitron would score later in the inning on centerfielder Colton Palmer's RBI single.
Hendrixson, Chinni and Brandon Barcalow each had two hits in the contest.
The four runs scored by Wayland to start the second game came on two walks, a hit batter, a balk, an infield single, a sacrifice fly, and a two-run error.
After OC built the 6-4 lead, WBU came back to tie it up in the third. Hendrixson led off the inning with a walk, and then advanced to second on Brian Allen's single to left. After a double steal by Hendrixson and courtesy runner Ben Christian, Carroll hit a two-run single up the middle. The junior third baseman drove in three of the four Pioneer runs.
The Eagles regained the lead with a single run in the bottom of the inning and added two more in the fourth off WBU starter Jace Chancellor.
The junior pitcher fell to 1-3 on the season. He struck out four in his four innings of work, but walked five and gave up ten hits. Tom Bailey pitched two shutout innings in relief, allowing just two hits.
The Pioneers (8-12, 0-5) will look to avoid the sweep on Saturday when they meet the Eagles (5-5, 2-5) in a single nine-inning game beginning at 1 p.m.
