Weather Shortens Doubleheader at St. Greg's

Box Score

SHAWNEE, Okla. --- The Pioneers lost an 8-1 decision in the first game of a doubleheader against St. Gregory's University on Friday afternoon at Bill Nicklas Field.  The second game was called because of the threat of severe weather at the top of the sixth inning with the home team up 10-1.

Initial word from Shawnee is that the second contest will be resumed on Saturday at noon.  The series will conclude with the third game immediately following.

In the opener on Friday, SGU got its eight runs on just seven hits, but four of those left the yard.  Dalton Streber hit a solo homer with two down in the second, and another with one out in the fourth.   Jacob Douglas had a three-run blast in the third.

WBU produced four hits.  Calvin Bass and Bernie Rosario each had a double.  Rosario's came with two outs in the top of the seventh, and the freshman shortstop came across with the Pioneer's only run one batter later after a Cavalier error.

Starting pitcher Tom Bailey fell to 4-4 on the season.  The sophomore gave up all seven hits and eight runs.  He walked a batter, hit another, and struck out three in 5-1/3 innings of work.  Carlos Abreau struck out both batters he faced in relief.

The nightcap was called when tornado warnings were issued for the Shawnee area.  Wayland had just two hits at the time, both off the bat of Colton Palmer.  The freshman centerfielder doubled to center in the third and singled to shallow right-center in the fifth.  His run in the third made it a 2-1 ballgame.

SGU broke it open in the home half of the third, pushing across six runs on six hits off WBU starter Cooper Reinbold.  The freshman wound up allowing all eight runs on eight hits and a walk in three innings of work.  Paxton Bartley gave up two runs on a hit and three walks in an inning-and-a-third.  Robert Carrion came in to get the final two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
