WBU swimmers perform well against NCAA D-II schools

ALAMOSA, Colo. – After a month between competitions, the Wayland Baptist swim teams traveled to Alamosa, Colo. to take on Adams State and the University of Colorado-Mesa on Saturday. The Wayland men team defeated Adams State, 143-59, before falling to Colorado-Mesa, 165-67. Swimming with limited numbers after an athlete was unable to compete due to an illness, the Pioneer women fell to both Adams State and Colorado-Mesa.

Head coach Alyson Hannan was pleased with the way that her teams competed after the long break and dealing with the high altitude in Colorado.

"We came out and swam pretty well," Hannan said. "It was an adjustment to swim in the high altitude because the longer the race is the harder it is to continue swimming faster.

"Our guys did a great job, especially considering the altitude factor. They stepped up and swam well. On the girls team, we only swam with three because one of them was too sick to compete. She swam the relay, but that's all she was able to do."

The men's relay teams continued to swim well, finishing second in the 400-yard medley and first in the 400-yard freestyle. The medley team finished with a time of 3:39.94, while the freestyle team posted a 3:19.60, 17 seconds in front of second-place Adams State.

As he has thus far in the Pioneers' young season, Hugo Gallegos led the Wayland men, finishing in second and third place in his individual events while helping the relay teams to first- and second-place finishes. Gallegos finished the 100-yard freestyle in 49.71 seconds, earning second place, and the 50-yard freestyle in 22.79 seconds, taking third.

Josiah Morales and Gabriel Phillips placed one-two in the 200-yard butterfly. Morales finished in 2:04.07, edging out teammate Phillips by just .15 seconds. Phillips also finished in second in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing half-a-second behind the leader in 53.41 seconds.

Bjoern Globke also put in a solid performance for the Pioneers, finishing second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:13.04, and third in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.57.

On the women's side, Vianney Trujillo led the way, coming in fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.86. Trujillo also swam the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, placing sixth in the 100 with a time of 1:15.00 and fifth in the 200 in 2:45.15.

For its next meet, Wayland will travel to Southlake Carroll on Nov. 22 to compete in the Southlake Shootout, which Hannan said will be a big meet for the Pioneers.

"The Southlake Shootout will be one of the bigger meets we swim in all year," she said. "There will probably be five or six teams there, and one that could win the NAIA national championship, so it will be a good test to see where we're at."
