Wayland Baptist Invitational ResultsLUBBOCK – As well as Alyson Hannan hoped Wayland Baptist's first-ever "home" swim meet would go, it went even better.
"We did awesome," Hannan said after the WBU men placed first and the women second on Friday night at the Wayland Baptist Invitational held at the Pete Ragus Aquatics Center. "It was a great day."
The Pioneer men accumulated 476½ points, edging NCAA Division II Adams State (Colo.), which finished second with 468. St. Gregory's took third with 306 points, while McMurry finished fourth with 294½.
On the women's side, Adams State ran away with the competition, scoring 500½ points. Wayland was a distant second with 247½, just ahead of McMurry with 233. St. Greg's was fourth with 55.
The meet featured a combination of individual events and relays. A separate competition, the Wayland Baptist Relays featuring only relay races, will be held beginning at noon Saturday back at the aquatics center.
Hannan couldn't say enough about her team after Friday's competition.
"We swam phenomenally," the coach said. "I'm very happy."
From top to bottom, Hannan said all of her student-athletes performed well.
"Across the board, everybody outdid themselves," she said. "It was really good to see."
The Pioneers turned in times comparable to what they posted at the end of last season at nationals.
"They swam really fast," Hannan said. "This puts us in position to improve upon our times and be faster than our national times very early in the season."
It wasn't immediately known which swimmers turned in national-qualifying performances, but Hannan said there were several.
"I'm pretty sure we qualified in every event we swam, or pretty close to it," she said.
Hannan hopes the Pioneers can come back on Saturday and do it again, but for now, she's overjoyed.
"I'm a happy coach, for sure."
