Box Score 2 SHAWNEE, Okla. – The Pioneer baseball team kept its win streak intact with a doubleheader sweep over St. Gregory's on Friday in Shawnee, Okla. Wayland won the first two games of the series, 11-5 and 10-4, to stay atop the Sooner Athletic Conference standings and extend its win streak to 12 in a row.
Wayland (20-6, 8-0) scored in all but one inning in game one, including one in the first off an RBI single from
Josh Alexander, scoring
Aaron Vallance from third.
The Pioneers put up three more in the second, all with two outs. St. Gregory's (5-16, 1-7) pitcher, Ben Moore, looked as if he had gotten himself out of a jam unscathed, but the speedy
Colton Palmer caused the Cavalier's short stop to rush a ground ball, causing an error. The error brought in
Chris Buitron who had doubled earlier in the inning.
Vallance and
Mark Davis brought in two more runs before the Cav's finally stopped the bleeding, but the Pioneers were up 4-0 by the end of the inning.
St. Greg's got its first run of the game in the second off a two-out, RBI single from Nate Stenburg. The run was the first given up by starting pitcher
Tom Bailey (5-1) since Feb. 28 in a 10-3 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God.
Both teams were shut out in the third, and both scored a single run in the fourth, taking the game to a 5-2 score in the fifth inning.
Brayden Blackwell gave WBU a big boost in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run, his first of the season, giving the Pioneers a 7-2 lead.
The Cavaliers would simply not go away, however, jumping on Bailey in the home half of the fifth.
Bailey got the leadoff hitter to ground out to Vallance for the first out of the inning, but gave up back-back singles before walking the fourth batter of the inning to load the bases. Bailey walked in a run before giving way to
Cachot Duncan.
Pitching with one out and the bases loaded, Duncan balked in another run, but escaped with minimal damage, getting an inning-ending strikeout after giving up a second run on a groundball to short. When the dust finally settled, the Pioneers held on to a 7-5 lead.
The Pioneers added a run in the sixth and three in the seventh, and Duncan shut down the Cav's in the final two innings to give WBU an 11-5 win.
In game two, Wayland continued to poor on the runs, scoring once in the first before putting up four runs in the second and third innings.
The Pioneer offense was stagnant for the remainder of the game, but WBU found a way to score a run in the sixth, giving itself 10 runs for the game.
Mason Taylor (5-1) threw six strong innings for the Pioneers, giving up three runs en route to his fifth win of the year.
Logan Evans also pitched for Wayland, relieving Taylor in the seventh inning after the first two batters reached safely.
Evans surrendered a run via a wild pitch, but got a groundball to Buitron a third, a popup to Lovato in left and a strikeout to end the game, 10-4.
The top of the Pioneer lineup led the way for WBU's offense, as Palmer and Vallance combined to score 10 of the team's 11 runs on Friday. Blackwell and De La Cruz each hit home runs, while Davis was four-for-seven on the day with three RBIs.
The Pioneers and Cavaliers are scheduled to finish up the series at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, but due to potential weather conditions the game could be postponed. Look to
