Results ABILENE – Some competitions must be prepared for in advance. The Wayland Baptist men's and women's swimming and diving team has been doing exactly that, and on Saturday afternoon they got to showcase what they've been practicing against the McMurry University Warhawks. The men won their match, 161-34, while the women fell short, 83-72.
"If we would've had our full team, we would have won," Coach Alyson Hannan said of the women's team that has a few injuries.
The women had two more swimmers qualify for nationals in different events. Sophomore DeAndre Small qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke (1 minute, 10.73 seconds) and freshman
Maria Barrera qualified in the 100 freestyle (56:25).
For the men, junior
Brandon Rodriguez won the 200 individual medley (2:04.16) and
Ethan Nicholson won the 200 freestyle (1:48.95).
"They all swam well," Hannan said.
Hannan used this meet as a "gauge" for both teams to see how they stack up. This performance is coming after a long week of new, more challenging training that Hannan has implemented into the team's schedule.
"We are preparing for our next meet in San Antonio," she said. "We are working on our intervals and getting faster times."
The Trinity Shootout is Nov. 21-22 starting at 10 a.m. That meet is where the training Hannan is putting her team through will need to show the most to get the last group of student-athletes qualified for nationals. There are two parts to the meet in which the swimmers will need to qualify in the morning in order to swim later on that evening.
