SAC's hottest team hands Pioneers pair of losses

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Game 1  Game 2  CHICKASHA, Okla. – The hottest baseball team in the Sooner Athletic Conference handed Wayland Baptist a pair of losses here Friday afternoon as the University of Science and Arts Drovers limited the Pioneers to two total runs, winning 3-1 and 5-1. The wins were the 11th and 12th in a row for the streaking Drovers (26-13, 9-7 SAC).
 
Wayland (27-14, 11-6) remains in third place in the conference standings, in between No. 7 Oklahoma Baptist (36-4, 12-2) and Texas Wesleyan (17-7, 9-5), who square off in a three-game series in Shawnee this weekend.
 
The Pioneers get another shot at stopping USAO's streak when the teams meet in the series final at noon Saturday. USAO will provide live stats and video (no audio) with links available at www.wbuathletics.com.
 
In game one Friday , Wayland was held to two hits, both in the third inning, off Jose Flores (3-0), who struck out seven Pioneers with one walk.
 
Lorenzo Soriano led off with the third with a solo home run, then Ethan Percell had a one-out single.
 
Wayland managed just two other base runners, Gaby De La Cruz on a fourth-inning walk and Austin Davis when he was hit by a pitch with one out in the seventh. Immediately after that, Ernesto Lizardi grounded into a double play to end the game.
 
WBU starter Tyler Adams (6-2) gave up six hits, walking four and striking out three.
 
The Drovers scored its first run in the first inning following a hit batsman, a single and the only error of the game.
 
USAO broke the 1-1 tie in the sixth when the Drovers pushed across their final two runs. A lead-off single and a sacrifice bunt were followed by a pair of two-out RBI-singles.
 
In the second game, the Pioneers gave up single runs in the first three innings, then the Drovers went up 5-0 went two more runs in the fifth. Wayland was held scoreless until ending the scoring drought in the seventh, but it was too little, too late.
 
The Pioneers' lone run occurred after Percell led off with a single and stole second. He scored following a one-out throwing error by the USAO shortstop, narrowly missing what would have been WBU's third shutout of the season.
 
USAO pitcher Allan Sanchez (5-3) allowed six hits – two by Percell – while striking out eight and walking one.
 
On the mound for WBU, Taylor Bridges (5-5) went five innings, allowing all five runs (four earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Kyle Parriera gave up no hits and struck out two in his one inning of work.
