Pioneers sweep Midwest Duals, set new record

KEARNEY, Neb – The No. 17th-ranked Wayland Baptist men's wrestling team went undefeated Friday and set new records for individual dual match wins at 17, surpassing the previous record of five. The Pioneers also set a new record with five straight wins in dual matches in one day.
 
Wayland defeated No. 9-ranked York College (Neb.) 23-22, Pratt Community College (Kan.) 41-9, Hastings College (Neb.) 29-15, No. 13 Doane College (Neb.) 33-11, and Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 28-23. Dakota Wesleyan is ranked the equivalent of
 
Coach Aaron Meister enjoyed his team's effort as each wrestler made big contributions and helped the Pioneers break new ground.
 
"It was a defining moment in our program's history," Meister said. "We got stronger as the day went on. To make this possible, different guys stepped up at different times."
 
 The most gratifying win of the day for Meister was against the 13th-ranked Doane Bears, who defeated the Pioneers earlier in the season at the Bacone Warrior Duals, 27-12.
 
 "We beat them and avenged a loss. That was good," Meister said.
 
On top of that, Wayland also gathered a close win against the highest-ranked opponent they've ever faced in the 9th-ranked York Panthers.
 
 The Pioneers had tremendous effort from all of their student-athletes, but the senior class provided the biggest boost, according to the coach.
 
"Among the huge contributions on the team, I would say Andrew Porras, Victor Thomas, Mich Napier and Markese Christian led the way," Meister said.
 
 Each of those seniors went undefeated on the day.
Next for the Pioneers is a rematch against the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys, who recently defeated the Pioneers 35-9 in Albuquerque. The rematch is set for 6 p.m. Jan. 27 in Plainview.
 
"We're hoping to turn that around," Meister said.
