Box Score 2 TUCSON, Ariz. – Wayland Baptist picked up two more wins in the desert, sweeping Mayville State (N.D.) in a doubleheader Thursday, 9-4 and 13-10.
The Pioneers (26-7), ranked the equivalent of 36
th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, were propelled on the day by three five-run innings, one in the first game and two in the second while the Comets (8-13) were hurt by four errors In each contest.
In the opener, Wayland's five-run frame occurred right off the bat in the first inning, and that was enough to carry the Pioneers although they added four more over the next six innings to win it, 9-4.
WBU ended with nine hits by seven different players.
Ernesto Lizardi and
Austin Davis led the way with two hits apiece. Seven Pioneers also produced RBI, led by
Alex Mumm with a pair.
Tyler Adams earned the victory, lasting 5 2/3 innings and giving up four hits and three runs with two strikeouts and five walks to keep his record perfect at 5-0.
Kaleb Gonzales recorded the final four outs, allowing one run on a hit with one K.
In game two, Mayville State (8-13) led 3-1 after 2½ innings, but the Pioneers put up back-to-back five-run innings in the third and fourth to take control. In the third, Wayland benefited from a pair of Mayville State errors, while in the fourth the Comets committed another error while the Pioneers recorded five of their 13 total hits.
WBU was up 13-3 with just three outs to go, but the Comets rallied with seven runs in the top of the seventh to make it interesting. Mayville State managed four hits and benefited from a pair of Pioneer miscues, but reliever

Matt Flores who relieved starter
Taylor Bridges early in the seventh – was able to close it out with the tying run at the plate when Brady Nygaard flied out to right.
Aaron Vallance and
Jake Doyle both went 3-for-4, while Bass and
Caleb Davidson had two hits each. Mumm and
Dillan Vigil tallied three RBI each, and the top five batters in WBU's order accounted for 11 of the team's 13 runs, with Vallance crossing home a team-high three times.
Bridges (6-2) allowed three earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and a walk in six innings.
Wayland wraps up its week in the desert, where the Pioneers have won four of their five games, at 1 p.m. Friday against Valley City State (N.D.). WBU defeated the Vikings in their tournament opener on Tuesday, 8-5.
