Pioneers take title, Dakiche captures crown at Wayland Baptist Invitational

Wayland Baptist took first place and the Pioneers' Enzo Dakiche captured top individual honors as the Wayland Baptist Invitational concluded Tuesday at Plainview Country Club.

After the tournament's second round was interrupted by inclement weather Monday afternoon, golfers wrapped up the second round Tuesday prior to playing the final 18 holes.

Fifth-ranked Wayland turned in rounds of 280, 284 and 282 for a 6-over par 846 total on the 72-par layout, giving the Pioneers an 11-shot win over Oklahoma Wesleyan (288-288-281—857). Other teams participating were Texas A&M-San Antonio, Oklahoma-Panhandle State, University of the Southwest and Jarvis Christian.

The Pioneers prevailed while not even counting Dakiche's tournament-winning score since he competed as an individual. The freshman from France led wire-to-wire, following up Monday's 3-under 67, which tied him for the lead, with a second-round 70 and another 67 for a 6-under 204. That resulted in a three-shot win over Liam Currid of Oklahoma Wesleyan (70-68-69—207).

"I'm thrilled to see Enzo win," WBU coach Tom Harp said. "He is a talented young man who has worked very hard this semester. It's impressive to see him pull off this victory in his second collegiate tournament. He is a quality young man with a great personality."

Dakiche's victory is the second of the year for a Pioneer. He joins Benjamin Lubker, who captured the title at the season-opening Mid-South Classic in Kansas. That was the first individual title for a Pioneer since Sentanio Minnie and Sebastien Tremulot tied for the title at the San Antonio Shootout in February 2020.

Besides Dakiche, three other Pioneers – Benjamin Lubker (74-70-68—212), Zane Welborn (71-72-69—212) and Jay Nathwani (70-70-72—212) – all tied for third place in the 36-golfer field. Rounding out the team were Vlastimil Miler (71-72-73—216), who tied for 11th, and Carson Grawunder (68-76-76—220), who tied for 18th.

Competing as individuals, WBU's Leonard Lebrun (70-68-76—214) tied for eighth and Joshua Smedema (73-71-72—216) tied for 11th.

The tournament marked the end of the fall season for Wayland, which opens the spring season Feb. 20 and 21 at the San Antonio Shootout.
