Three more student-athletes – Clarissa Rejino of Muleshoe, Abbey Soto of Lubbock and Mikayla Carrillo of Plainview – have signed with the Wayland Baptist softball program.
Rejino, a pitcher, is transferring to Wayland from Murray State College (Okla.),
"I chose Wayland because of the great people that work there. Wayland also upholds the same values as I do and I'm grateful they gave me a chance to show that on the softball field. This opportunity has given me the chance to grow into a better person on and off the field," said Rejino, who signed July 28 at the KCBD Community Coverage Tour in Plainview.
Rejino will major in exercise sport science with an emphasis on coaching.
Earlier this week, Soto and Carrillo both signed in the foyer of Gates Hall. Their joint signing was special for them since Soto and Carrillo knew each other growing up as their dads worked together.
Soto, an outfielder, is transferring from Clarendon College. She chose Wayland "because of the loving community and the amazing things I have heard about the university. Not only am I blessed to become a part of the new softball program, I am extremely excited to make Wayland my home away from home."
Soto, who was a member of the National Honor Society, plans to major in elementary education with a specialization in special education.
Carrillo is a middle fielder who was defensive player of the year at shortstop her senior year at Plainview High School after helping the Lady Bulldogs make the state playoffs two consecutive years. She was awarded Miss PHS for playing four sports throughout her high school career. Carrillo qualified for the regional cross country meet her freshman year.
"I chose Wayland because it gives me an opportunity to continue playing the sport I love with the comfort of being close to home and family," said Carrillo, who will major in pre-nursing.
Carrillo is the fifth PHS Lady Bulldog to sign with Wayland, joining Alexis Lopez, Aaleah Rodriguez, Cloe DeLeon and Samantha Briones. Also signed are Adrianna Zapata-Martinez of Slaton, Galilea Perez of Morton and Bailey Jones of Littlefield, giving WBU 10 total commitments.
The signees are considered part of a "leadership class" which will compete independently during the 2022-23 academic year before Pioneer softball joins the rest of WBU's sports in the Sooner Athletic Conference during the 2023-24 academic year.
