Flying Queens Bounce Back with a Sooner Athletic Conference Road Win at Texas Wesleyan

Fort Worth, Texas – Freshman Bobbie Fouquet went for 19 points, Linda Brice and Ellie Bruffey each added 10 points respectively, and Marchelle Bowden added 9 points off the bench as the Flying Queens picked up a road Sooner Athletic Conference win over Texas Wesleyan (7-6, 3-4 SAC).

RV Wayland Baptist (10-3, 5-2 SAC) got off to a strong start this afternoon going on a 8-2 run to begin the game with Fouquet scoring all 8 of the Queens points. Bruffey was able to convert a layup with just over two and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter, building the Flying Queen led to 14-5. The Queens ended the opening quarter with a 14-9 lead.

The Rams responded in the second quarter, hitting a few 3-pointers and a layup, taking a 26-22 lead over the Queens. After a couple of Ram free throws, 3-points makes by Emily Sigala and Bruffey cut the Ram lead down to 29-28. The Flying Queens trailed 31-28 going into the halftime break.

The Queens came out firing to start the third quarter with Sigala and Fouquet hitting a combined three 3-pointers to help the Queens regain the lead 39-36 with just under four and a half minutes remaining in the quarter. Buckets by Brice and Bowden extended the lead for the Queens to 49-39 to end the third quarter. The Queens outscored the Rams 21-8 in the third frame thanks to 5 3-point makes for the Queens to the Rams one make. The Queens also had 6 assists in the quarter showing a great willingness to share the basketball.

The Rams were able to trim the deficit to five points, down 58-53, but two jumpers by Bowden gave the Queens a 64-53 lead, which would hold to stand. The Queens went on to win the matchup 67-59 to secure another Sooner Athletic Conference Road win.

When talking about the need to respond after the tough loss Thursday night at USAO, Coach Jason Cooper wanted to see more fight out of his squad. He said, "The last two days we have talked about a lot about our intensity and our lack of fight in Thursday's game. I challenged the girls to get on the floor for the ball. Someone dive for it. We tracked that today and had 14 girls get on the floor for a ball. It was a completely different level of "Fight" for our team."

Bobbie Fouquet finished with 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 3-pointers. Linda Brice added 10 points, a rebound, and an assist. Ellie Bruffey went for 10 points and 4 rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench. Marchelle Bowden added 9 points and 7 rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench. Emily Sigala went for 7 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.

Up next for the Flying Queens is a home Sooner Athletic Conference game against the Lions of SAGU. Tip is scheduled for January 11, 2024 at 6:00 PM in the Hutch.
