RV Flying Queens Fall to 3rd in SAC Standings After Loss at Langston

Box Score Langston, Oklahoma – Bobbie Fouquet went for 16 points, but the Flying Queens couldn't overcome tough third quarter and fall short to RV Langston (20-5, 15-4 SAC) 77-58 to surrender second place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings.

RV Wayland Baptist (19-6, 14-5 SAC) fell behind 6-0 in the first four minutes of the opening period, but a couple of buckets by Megan Nestor and a bucket by Linda Brice tied the game up at 6. The Flying Queens took a 10-9 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the opening period after Brice knocked down another jumper, giving her 6 of the 10 Flying Queen points. After a Langston missed jumper, the Queens claimed possession and got a made jump shot from Taylor Houston to go up 12-9 with just over two minutes left in the quarter. The Lions finished the first quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 15-12 lead over the Flying Queens into the second quarter.

After giving up the opening bucket of the second quarter to go down by five points, the Queens responded with a quick 5-0 run of their own sparked by a Fouquet 3-pointer and capped off by a bucket by Houston to make the score 17-17. After an 8-1 Lion run made it 25-18 Langston, Houston converted another bucket to make it 25-20 with just over four minutes until the halftime break. The Lions answered with a 5-0 run of their own to push their lead to 10 points with just over three minutes until the halftime break. The Queens got back-to-back bucket by Fouquet and Emily Sigala to make it 30-25 with just over a minute left in the half. Ellie Bruffey was able to clean up the offensive glass for a putback bucket as time expired to trim the Flying Queen deficit to 4 points. The Queens trailed 36-32 at the halftime break.

The third quarter is where this game got away for the Flying Queens as Langston outscored them 22-7 in the period to take a 57-39 lead into the final quarter. The Queens were only able to convert on 30% of the field goal attempts in the third quarter, and they also committed 10 turnovers to Langston's 4 turnovers. Langston also attempted 17 free throws in the third quarter, while the Flying Queens had 2 free throw attempts.

The Queens didn't show any quit as they matched the Lions in fourth quarter scoring at 19 a piece. The Queens still only shot 23.5% from the floor in the final period, but they grabbed 6 offensive boards and stayed aggressive by getting to the line for 15 free throw attempts. The Queens were unable to start a comeback and suffered a 77-58 defeat to RV Langston.

Head Coach Jason Cooper talked about his team's youth saying, "This was a really tough environment to play in. We showed our youth a little here and there. There were a lot of lessons learned tonight for our young team."

Bobbie Fouquet finished with 16 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. Megan Nestor added 13 points and 12 rebounds for another double-double. Linda Brice scored 11 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and went 5-5 from the free throw line. Maria Ghaleb had 10 rebounds and 4 assists in 25 minutes.

The Flying Queens, who have already clinched a spot in the conference tournament, have three more road games to try and lock up the 2-seed and host the first matchup in the tournament.

The RV Flying Queens will look to get back in the win column as they face Central Christian College (Kan.) (4-20, 0-18 SAC) in another Sooner Athletic Conference road game. Tip is scheduled for Saturday at 2:00 PM.
