Flying Queens Dominate Central Christian from the tip to earn 15th Sooner Athletic Conference Win of Season

McPherson, Kansas – Megan Nestor and Linda Brice combined for 49 points as the RV Flying Queens took care of business on the road against Central Christian College (Kan.) (5-21, 1-19 SAC).

RV Wayland Baptist (20-6, 15-5 SAC) dominated this game from the opening tip as they took a 24-0 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the first quarter before the Tigers could score their first point. The Flying Queen defense was swarming the Tiger early on, and they only allowed Central Christian to score two points the entire first quarter, which came on free throw attempts. Nestor finished with 11 first quarter points, and Bobbie Fouquet scored 6 points in the first period.

The Flying Queens began the second quarter the same way they began the game – by going on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 32-2 just under three minutes into the second quarter. Nestor scored 6 of the first 8 points for the Queens in the early going of the second quarter, while Fouquet got a bucket off the dish from Emily Sigala. With the score at 43-10 and just under a minute until the halftime break, Nestor scored her final bucket of the first half after a great pass from Fouquet to give the Queens a massive 45-10 lead at the half.

With the score at 47-12, the Queens defensive pressure picked up where it left off to end the half after Nestor was able to steal, which allowed Sigala to push in transition and find Brice for a nice 3-point bucket to make it 50-12 Wayland Baptist. Brice then knocked down a 2-point jumper after another steal from Nestor to make it a 52-14 lead just under three minutes into the second half. The Queens took a 54-17 lead, but Brice would go on to score the next 7 points for the Queens to take a 61-17 lead at the halfway point of the third period. Freshman Peyton North entered late in the third quarter, and she scored the final 5 points of the period for the Queens to give them a huge 43-point advantage heading into the final quarter, 70-27.

Central Christian opened the fourth quarter scoring with a quick 4-0 run, but Nestor responded with a made bucket, and Brice sunk another 3-pointer to push the Queens lead up to 75-34 with just over six minutes left in regulation. A few late buckets by Taylor Houston, and another North 3-pointers concluded the Queens pure domination of Central Christian by the score of 92-40. The Queens got a nice bounce back win after falling at Langston on Thursday night.

When talking about needing to have solid bounce back game, Head Coach Jason Cooper mentioned, "It was good to get back on the winning track today. It's difficult to come in and focus on a game like this one after being so keyed up for the Langston game Thursday."

Coach Cooper continued, "We wanted to come out and put it away early. We didn't want to have a struggle fest with CCC. I was proud of our focus and intensity in the first half."

Megan Nestor continued her dominant run with 29 points, 15 rebounds, shot 13-18 from the floor, and also dominated defensively with 6 steals. Linda Brice had one of her best shooting nights of the year – going for 20 points, 2 rebounds, shooting 3-7 from behind the 3-point arc, and racking up 5 steals. Bobbie Fouquet added 12 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Taylor Houston scored 11 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and shot 5-8 from the floor. Peyton North had 8 points, 5 rebounds, and shot 3-5 from the floor including 2-4 from 3-point range.

The Flying Queens advance into the final weekend of games in the regular season, as they will look forward to a road matchup with the University of North Texas at Dallas. Tip is set for Thursday night at 6:00 PM.
