Nestor Adds Another 20-20 Game but Queens Furious Comeback Falls Two Points Shy to 16th Ranked JBU

Plainview, Texas – Despite Megan Nestor going for another 20-20 game, the Flying Queens comeback falls two points shy at home against 16th ranked John Brown University (19-3, 16-0 SAC).
 
RV Wayland Baptist (17-5, 12-4 SAC) got off to a tough start shooting the ball and fell behind 20-2 with just over three minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Golden Eagles hit 3 3-pointers in that early 20-2 run, and the Flying Queens only shot 19% from the floor and 0-6 from 3-point range. Nestor converted a couple of layups including one with just under ten seconds remaining in the quarter. The Queens trailed 23-10 after the first quarter.
 
The Queens exchanged 3-pointers with JBU after Ellie Bruffey sunk one from deep to make the score 26-13. With just under six minutes until the halftime break, Marchelle Bowden was able to clean up the offensive boards for the Queens and finish a layup to trim the Golden Eagle lead to just 11 points. Bobbie Fouquet was able to steal a pass from the Golden Eagles and take it the other way for an and-one layup to make the score 32-22 with just over two minutes until the end of the period. Bowden was able to attack the bucket for a good layup, but the Golden Eagles responded immediately with a layup of their own with only three seconds remaining until halftime. The Queens trailed 38-24 going into the halftime break.
 
The Queens opened the second half hitting their first three shots from the floor capped off by a Linda Brice 3-pointer, but John Brown answered with three buckets to make their lead 45-31. The Queens energy intensified as the third quarter went along, and momentum was on their side after Bowden drained a 3-pointer to cut the Golden Eagle lead to just 6 points with just under three minutes remaining in the period. With just over thirty seconds left in the frame, Nestor caught a pass from Taylor Houston and finished a tough layup to trim their deficit to just 4 points. The Queens trailed 48-43 at the end of the third quarter after JBU converted a free throw.
 
The Flying Queens opened the scoring in the final frame with a layup by Taylor Houston from an assist by Emily Sigala and trailed 48-45. JBU converted an and-one to take a 7-point lead with just over six minutes remaining in regulation, but buckets by Bowden and Nestor cut the deficit back to just 3 points. Nestor continued to dominate on the interior after grabbing an offensive rebound and going back up for the layup, making the score 59-58 JBU with :17 remaining in regulation. After the Golden Eagles made a free throw, Linda Brice was able to attack the bucket to her left and finish a tough layup with only four seconds remaining and the game tied at 60. After JBU called a full timeout to advance the ball to their offensive end, JBU attacked the basket and drew a tough foul with one second on the clock to take two free throws, which the Golden Eagles converted both attempts. The Queens got a 3-point shot at the buzzer, but it rattled around and out, and the Queens suffered a tough 62-20 defeat to the 16th ranked team in the country.
 
Megan Nestor dominated the Golden Eagles with 22 points, 21 rebounds, 2 assists, and 9-14 shooting from the floor. Marchelle Bowden added 9 points and 5 rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench. Linda Brice scored 12 points and grabbed 2 rebounds.
 
The RV Flying Queens will look to bounce back next Thursday night when they face off against Texas Wesleyan University (10-11, 6-9 SAC). Tip is set for 6:00 PM at the Hutcherson Center.
