Fort Worth, Texas – Wayland Baptist won their first Sooner Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers needed a big finish in the last event of the day as they placed second in the 4x400-meter relay to finish with 152 points, inching out host Texas Wesleyan who placed third in the event and with 147 points overall. The women's team tied for sixth with 76 points.
The Pioneers had several make the podium by finishing in the top three in their event. Gold medal winners include
Matthew Gordon in both the 800-meter run and the 1500-meter run,
David Hernandez in the 10,000 meter-run and
Mia Gray in the women's discus.
Second place finishers include
Mia Gray in the women's shot put, Amber Seay in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase,
Jace Sanchez in the 1500-meter run, the 5000-meter run and the 10,000-meter run,
Houston Stark in the high jump, Diego Constantino in the pole vault and
Aidan Heredia in the men's decathlon. Wayland had two relay teams finish second as well including the 4x400-meter relay team of Todd Young,
Case Drum, Diego Constantino and
Matthew Gordon and the 4x800-meter relay team comprised of
Ethan Jonason,
Matthew Gordon,
Ryder Robison and
David Hernandez.
Ryder Robison finished third in the 10,000-meter run and Inmaculada Felipe Delgado placed third in the women's 1500-meter run.
Toby Kirk was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Men's Coach of the Year.
