HOBBS, N.M. — Wayland Baptist women's golf earned a sixth-place finish out of 14 teams at the Battling in the Desert, with Isabelle Victoria Soh and Bia Mesquita leading the Pioneers in the 76-player field.
The three-round tournament was played at Rockwind Community Links Golf Course, a par-72, 6,015-yard layout. Wayland placed three golfers inside the top 30 and five inside the top 45.
Soh and Mesquita finished tied for 25th at 17-over par with matching three-round totals of 233.
Soh opened the tournament with an even-par 72, the lowest round of the tournament for the Pioneers. Her opening round featured three birdies, including a birdie on the par-3 10th. She followed with rounds of 79 and 82 to finish at 233.
Mesquita reached the same total in consistent fashion, carding rounds of 78, 78 and 77. She saved her best round for the final day, posting a 5-over 77 that included birdies on Nos. 10, 13 and 14.
Juanita Villafane was close behind, finishing tied for 29th at 19-over. Villafane opened with a 77 before posting consecutive rounds of 79 to finish with a three-round total of 235.
Ellen Lonergan finished tied for 40th at 30-over after rounds of 85, 80 and 81. Lonergan improved by five strokes between the opening and second rounds and completed the tournament with a total of 246.
Marissa Armendariz placed tied for 43rd at 33-over, recording rounds of 84, 78 and 87 for a total of 249. Her second-round 78 marked a six-stroke improvement from the opening round.
Competing as an individual, Danity Diaz finished 66th at 52-over. Diaz carded rounds of 88, 88 and 92 for a three-round total of 268.

Wayland's sixth-place finish among 14 teams was highlighted by the pair of top-25 finishes from Soh and Mesquita, while Villafane gave the Pioneers a third golfer inside the top 30.
