Wayland dominates relays at opening outdoor meet

ABILENE – Wayland Baptist dominated the men's and women's relays, winning every team event it entered as the Pioneers opened the outdoor season on Saturday at the War Hawk Classic.
 
Both Wayland squads placed fifth in the event, the men scoring 49 points and the women 52. Host McMurry won the 12-team men's field with 108 points, ahead of Tarleton State (92), West Texas A&M (72), Abilene Christian (52) and Wayland. For the women, WTAMU came out on top of 13 teams with 90½ points, ahead of McMurry (69½), Tarleton State (62), Abilene Christian (57) and Wayland.
 
The WBU men won five events and the Pioneer women three. Of the eight combined first-places, half were in relays.
 
The men's 4x100 relay of Jeffery Josephs, Stephen Sutherland, Justin Scruggs and Durawn Howard turned in a time of 40.85 seconds, while Josephs, Lorenzo Dolphus, Sutherland and Howard ran the 4x200 in 1:26.51.
 
Scruggs also was first in the 100 in 10.41, as were De'Vion Simpson in the 800 (1:59.68) and Pierre Banks in the 110 hurdles (14.28).
 
For the women, Caitlin McKnight, Alexis Browner, Angie Quiah and Gortia Ferguson were first in the 4x100 in 46.21. Ferguson, Quiah and Browner were joined by Shani Adams in the 4x200 as that foursome clocked 1:39.39.
 
Adams posted the other first for WBU in the 400 in 56.00. Browner had Wayland's lone second place in the 100 (11.88).
 
Wayland's next competition is the prestigious Texas Relays in Austin starting Thursday.
