LAUREL, Mont. – Wayland Baptist shot its lowest round of the season Tuesday and, along with
Mason Garrett, finished second at its second tournament of the fall, the Beartooth Invitational.
"We played much better today. I was so happy for the girls," coach
Matt Garrett said.
After opening with a 326 Monday at Laurel Golf Club, Wayland fired a 312 Tuesday when three Pioneers shots in the 70s. WBU remained in second place with a 638 total, 10 shots behind host Rocky Mountain College, ranked the equivalent of 31
st in the NAIA. Rocky Mountain's "B" team was a distant third (350-351—701).
Four of Wayland's golfers bettered their score on day two.
Mason Garrett, who was third following a 78 Monday, improved to 4-over 76 Tuesday for a 154 total, six shots behind winner Valentina Zuleta of Rocky Mountain (72-76—148).
Morgan Rutledge, after a first-round 82, shot 75 and improved three places for fourth place at 157. One shot behind her in fifth was
Bianca Cunningham (81-77—158).
Alexza Madrid (85-86—171) wound up in 12
th place, one spot in front of
Ashlynn Watley (95-84—179) and medalist
Trinity Conard (88-91—179).
Nineteen golfers participated.
"We are real close to breaking 310 and chasing after 299," Coach Garrett said.
Next up for WBU is the Farmers Insurance Samuel Proal Invitational in Pueblo, Colo., Oct. 10 and 11.
